We had a few returns on our special mailing so now we can make our plans. We will not go to a restaurant. The gathering is to be held at Paniola's. There will be a per person charge which we will determine in next month's newsletter. Watch for more on this later.

The Trail Riders are working with Foreman George Coan of The Old Cowboy Picture Show in South Carolina requesting that Johnny Mack Brown be considered for induction into the The National Cowboy and Heritage Museum Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. A petition has been printed for 25 people to support this. Please write to Jack R. Harding for the printed petition to gather signatures or send your individual petition. Thanks for your support.

Chester and I drove to Lone Pine for the film festival. We had only one day to spend so we left early. The drive up 395 is fun for me. We made the usual stop at Mohave for breakfast at Mike's Place. The food is nothing special, plain fare, but lots of it. Makes for a good stop. Passing Red Rock was difficult. We both wanted to stop.

Arriving in Lone Pine was, as usual, exciting. Parking was very easy which surprised me. We walked to the Dow and looked for some of our friends. That's when we discovered most people arrive later, in the afternoon. We covered all of the events in town, making a visit to the park, wandered to the school to see Ed ("Paniola") who was running the movies for the weekend. We had a good chance to be there for the ground breaking for the museum but we blew it. We found McDonalds and had coffee instead.

We did get to see many of the Trail Riders who were there, and many, many celebrities that were there.

Our day was busy. We spent the evening listening to John Locke and Kathy who were playing at one of the night clubs. They were great!

Had to cut it short as we drove back that night.

This month's Tip of the White Hat goes to Foreman George "Carolina" Coan of The Old Cowboy Picture Show in South Carolina for petitioning the National Cowboy and Heritage Museum in Oklahoma to consider inducting Johnny Mack Brown into their Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2004. This represents the one hundredth anniversary of his birthday. If you would like to support the petition, there is more information at the end of this newsletter.

Movies watched in September were In Old Santa Fe (1934) starring Ken Maynard and The Lone Ranger (1936) starring Lee Powell.

Having another Christmas Party has been discussed to be held on Wednesday, December 17th at Paniola's or at a restaurant. Cost would be $5.00 per person at Paniola's like last year and would be more depending on what you order at the restaurant. Please write and sign a letter to the induction committee for the National Cowboy and Heritage Museum of Oklahoma City and mail to: Jack R. Our partner, John "Chester" Brown celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary in a very special way. He proposed to Rose (his wife) who accepted... again! They made an appointment with their minister and did the vow thing all over again. Then they left on a honeymoon to the same place they were 40 years before although they couldn't get the same room. It wasn't cleaned yet. They said they had a very special time, enjoying the whole time and the scenery. Chester and "Miss" Rose, congratulations!

We have decided to have a "get together" on December 17th. Buck alluded to it earlier in the letter. It would help if all that are interested would drop a short line showing interest. Could you?

We would appreciate any news items you come across. Things of interest, like a good shoot-out at the corral - or a special recipe for prune cake.

This month's Tip of the White Hat goes to Mr. Jim Roberts for holding his annual grand affair at the Sportsman's Lodge in North Hollywood on the eve of Western Film's big night: The Annual Golden Boot Awards. For more years than my memory can account for, Mr. Roberts has traveled from his home in New Orleans to celebrate the grand day and values of Western Films with fellow fans, friends and actors of the Hollywood Western Community. The evening, as always, was full of foot tapping music, memoiries, a big buffet featuring honest-to-goodness buffalo burgers and all the trimmings. This year's Pre-Boot was well attended as always and everyone left the evening with warm memories and happy smiles thanks to Jim Roberts.

In August we watched quite a few movies as Charlie "Blackie" King and his riders keep causing havoc with the film Paniola Had chosen - and he had to keep changing films. Paniola has a large assortment of movies so he picked another on from his library. We were happy to have Roger and Jerry Nicodemus join us at Paniola's meeting. We had no August 20th meeting as Buck was ill. He is doing better now and looking forward to hosting his September meeting.

For the Trail Riders the roundup and the next day Golden Boot Awards were a special time. Our special friend, Tommy Farrell, received his "Boot" this time, and it was about time. It is a real kick to be honored by your peers. Also honored were Trail Riders Chris Alcaide and Kelo Henderson. The roundup was attended by many celebrities, too numerous to list. Also attending were several Trail Riders we don't get to see too often. Larry "Nevada" Smith, "Miss" Paula and her Mother, Dave "Cheyenne" Pitts and "Miss" Kathy. Of course the Pierson's "Slick" and "Sidekick" Marilyn were there.

I managed to talk to Jim Roberts who said his recent illess was no longer a problem. Good News!!!

Herb Jeffries and Savannah were telling of their recent honor of doing a concert for our President, George Bush. I told Savannah I did not have a picture of her and Herb together and she promptly posed with Herb for a picture. It turned out great.

There's a lot more I could say about the Roundup but this will have to do!

Sunday, August 30th was spent enjoying the presence and home of Wilma Irvine. It was a memorial for her mother, Irene, who recently died. It was a very special gathering for friends and relations, business associates and many neighbors. Wilma was a gracious hostess who made all feel at home.

A special part of the day happened with butterflies. An old Indian tradition believes that butterflies will carry your prayer and wish to heaven. Wilma had frozen butterflies that were placed in paper envelopes for each of us and we released them after her eulogy. It was a very dramatic moment when these butterflies all took flight around us. It was a special event that will be remembered for years to come. Thank you Wilma.

What a night! This year's Golden Boot Awards was quite a night for the Trail Riders as Honored Club Members "Mister" Tommy Farrell, Kelo Henderson and Chris Alcaide were honored with golden statuettes. We were so thrilled and happy for our fellow club members. Congratulations Trail Riders!

Movies watched in July were Rustlers starring Tim Holt and Richard Martin, plus Law and Lead starring Rex Bell plus a documentary on The Polynesian Cultural Art Center located a bit west of Tombstone, over around Honolulu.

Small chariot about 3 feet tall, excellent construction, used in early Laurel & Hardy movies. Selling for what I have in it: $200.00. Also for sale, a prop wooden cannon used in the Errol Flynn pirate movies. Barrel is 2' around and on wheels, $350.00.

Cheyenne called to let the club know that Herb "The Bronze Buckaroo" Jefferies has just performed at the White House for President Bush.

Sky King and Paniola both announced that a 36 Film Festival featuring all 3D movies will be held at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood during August.

Golden Grizz is up and attending meetings after his recent leg problem.

...and the Trail Riders elected not to hold another Film Festival Dinner at Corriganville Park this fall.

Wishing everyone a happy August full of family BBQ, picnic and vacation trips and a month for me free of rushing paramedics to my home. Great guys but wish things would settle down so Joyce need not make any more frantic phone calls. She agrees.

The Trail Riders extend their most sincere condolences to HiYa Wilma on the passing of her mother.

Tip of the White Hat

This month's Tip of the White Hat goes to John "Chester" Brown for his fond rememberance while writing about the Trail Riders Trusty Steed "Raider", we rode each year in our roping tournament. Made by Tim "Durango" McIvain out of wood and wearing Johnny "Roper's" saddle of handtooled leather, Raider was our speed. We threw ropes while sitting in the saddle. Our thanks to Chester for the memories and, again, thanks to Durango for furnishing us our steed.

We have a special bit of poetry by a person we all know, Ed "Paniola" Phillips. This is what happens to your mind as doctors put you under. Nurses write the rambling for you and they are as follows:

Movie Cowboy

I was a movie cowboy in a former life
Carried a gun and toted a knife
Had a horse loyal and true
Sometimes I called him Tony; sometimes Old Blue

Had a sidekick that was a little crazy
And sometimes he was a little lazy
There was always a co-star; a pretty gal
They called her Peggy, Dale or sometimes Sal

There were bad guys and I knew them well
And the locations sometimes were worse than hell
I'd fight the bad guys, sometimes twice and always won
Then I'd hug the gal, kiss the horse and the movies done

T'was a life I lived for many a year
And was a time that I hold dear
It's all gone now, it's in the past
I figured a long time ago that it wouldn't last

So I saved my money and bought a place with a lot of room

Tip of the White Hat

This month goes out to Paniola for making his May 21st meeting so special as he showed the Lone Ranger movie, "The Lost City of Gold" on his new electronic projecting machine. This DVD/Video machine blows up the film to fill an 8 foot by 8 foot movie screen. The image is projected thru three lenses that form on the screen so brilliantly and so sharp that it is like watching a 3D movie. Wow!

Mister Tommy Farrell Honored

Trail Rider "Mister" Tommy Farrell was notified that he was nominated and accepted by the Golden Boot Award's Committee to be honored at this year's ceremoinies in August. All of the Trail Riders are elated that he is being honored and many will be involved in his night with Mr. Tom Corrigan preparing a montage of his films to be shown before his presentation. Slick and Sidekick will interview him before the ceremoinies begin. Congratulations Mr. Farrell!! Enjoy every minute of your night being honored as all of us have for years, with you attending many of our activities and being a member in our club.

Needless to say May was quite a month with the announcement of Tommy Farrell being awarded a Golden Boot Award at this year's August ceremoinies... and watching the Lone Ranger movie on Paniola's new 8 ft. screen. T'was great having Chatsworth at the meeting to enjoy the film just weeks after his surgery. A big tip of my "Happy Stetson" to all who sent me happy birthday cards. They sure have given me many a smiles as I pass their display on the piano. Thanks for all those smiles everyone! I sure needed them this past month. Have a great June!

All were early '50's TV Westerns recorded and edited by Buck off of the American One TV Network.

A Perplexing Question

In the beginning the Lord Himself made man,
Put a rope and reins in his hands.
We've come a fer piece since those early days,
Worn out a few saddles cuttin' the trail along the way,
Riding, roping, brandin' and such.
A way of life that I love so much.
Folks say our kind is almost all gone.
I hope and pray those folks are wrong,

Tip of the White Hat

To Trail Rider "Tobasco" for his bravery and calmly driving Grimes Canyon between Filmore and Simi Valley to attend the last several Trail Rider Meetings. That road is not an easy one and a caution to drive with all the twists and turns and the vast drop offs into the gully run offs with no guard rails along the sides. He drives it at night and once when it was raining! Now that really deserves a tip of the Hat!

HOWDY DEACON AND HANGMAN!

Welcome to the Trail Riders, Jim "Deacon" Vecchio and Jon "Hangman" Couture! It is great having you with us!

"Hangman" rides the range up in Brush Prarie, Washington and is the Mayor and Marshal of the ten building western town he and his wife constructed. He writes all is peaceful there due to the town's Marshal/Mayor handle "Hangman". The town was built as they remembered visiting "Corriganville" many times back in the 60's when they lived in Simi Valley. Simi has changed a lot Hangman, as well as Corriganville, but the park district has turned the acerage back to all trails, cleaned out the lake to its full size and has made all look like thru the camera lenses of long ago. It's a great place to visit and enjoy a nature walk down the memory lane of the exciting Saturday Matinee Western Movies filmed there.

ROUNDING-UP

This past month has really been a joy for me with a movie never gotten, due to all wanting to talk. The hour just flew!

Receiving the "Deacon's" and "Hangman's" applications brighten up my day and reading their comments sure had me wishing they lived closer so all of us could know each other better.

Learning of Durango's successful surgery and returning home was a big smile. I am so grateful to Cheyenne for keeping all of us informed.

Yep! These last four weeks have been quite a month full of friendship and caring. A good month and here's another in March for all of us.

HOWDY TOBASCO AND WALKSHORSE!

Welcome to the Trail Riders, "Tobasco" and "Walkshorse". Your membership cards and belt buckle's will be soon on their way to you.

Dave "Tobasco" Twomey rides the range just North of Simi Valley in the scenic city of Fillmore and wrote in his letter that he is really glad he located us as he has heard about us for years. We are glad, too, and look forward to watching some Sunset Carson, Fred Scott and Wild Bill Elliott movies with ya, Tabasco! Like that handle as you say, "it is Hot".

Ronald B. Walkshorse has chosen his last name for his handle, naturally. He grew up watching his grandfather, Russell "Barlow" Simpson travel from one movie set to the other, working mostly on the B Westerns of the fifty's, and also the Western movies of the sixty's. It sure sounds like he had fun growing up. He lives in Hinckley, Utah and is a member of the Movie Props Association. One of his ancestors fought a the Little Big Horn. (Guess which side)
